MGM Television announced that it is developing a show based on Hunter S. Thompson’s life. The show is tentatively titled Fear and Loathing. Davey Holmes will act as showrunner. Holmes is also currently adapting Get Shorty for the small screen. He is co-showrunning with Bob Nelson, the screenwriter for the 2013 film Nebraska. Thompson was a “gonzo” journalist and the author of such books as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Hell’s Angels. He had three movies based on his writings and had been featured in several documentaries.
Thompson’s journalism was highly subjective and questioned authority in the 1970’s. He also managed to do his gonzo writing under the influence of multiple drugs. No matter how surreal his writing would get, there was always a raw passion driving the writing that inspired me. Sadly, he took his own life in 2005 after dealing with declining health problems. At his memorial service, his ashes were mixed with fireworks and launched over his property in the Colorado mountains. It just goes to show that Thompson was too weird to live, and too rare to die.
