It’s been reported that Park Chan-wook will be adapting The Little Drummer Girl by John le Carré as a television series. Park’s name alone automatically makes me interested in the project because of his excellent direction. I hold his film Old Boy in high regard, and I think his usually dark and twisted vision could go well with this project. However, this won’t be the first adaptation of this book. There was a feature film version released in 1984 that starred Diane Keaton. Here is the description of the original novel.
Charlie is a promiscuous, unsuccessful English actress in her twenties. Intrigued by a handsome, solitary stranger, she finds herself lured into the “theatre of the real.” For the mysterious man is Kurtz, an embattled Israeli intelligence officer out to stop the bombing of Jews in Europe. Forced to play her most challenging role, Charlie is plunged into a deceptive and delicate trap set to ensnare an elusive Palestinian terrorist … and soon proves herself a double agent of the highest order.
